The Komboloi Gallery |
For many hundreds of years, throughout many cultures (from Buddhist to Hindu; Moslem to Christian), beads have been used to calm nerves, count prayers, and ward off loneliness. In a time of global uncertainties and increased fears in all of our daily lives, the "companionship" of worry beads (komboloi in Greek) has seen a great resurgence. Many also offer them now as a gift -- not unlike the symbol of eye charms (matia)-- to watch over the recipient.

Amber has long been the chosen material for the finest komboloi. Amber is fossilized, petrified tree resin; formed over millions of years. It is also known as "kecribari" to the Greeks and "electron" to the ancient Greeks, and has long been recognized for great vibrance and variety of color, magnetic quality, and an "inner life" of warmth. When "real" komboloi are selected, amber is most often the material chosen, with other fine pieces made from usury (black coral), mother of pearl, bone, silver, and many varieties of faux amber (some called faturan, imitation amber and bakelite) formed with dust from amber bead production and mixed with other resins.
